Gardening and Agriculture

If you like farming or having your own crops, you’ve probably heard of the hydroponics system. Would you like to have a hydroponics system at home? In the blog of Llaberia Group we will give you the necessary information to carry it out without problems! Let’s tell you what you need to know about, also called, soilless agriculture.

What is hydroponics?

It is a method of cultivation that comes from growing on land. We call the hydroponics technique soilless agriculture because it can be done in any space, from rooftops and gardens, to rugged terrain, non-fertile soils, etc. In addition, it is a very appropriate technique for people who want to have their own crops in their home.

When growing without soil the key to this system is to work with water and structures that allow you to support the plant and be able to provide the necessary nutrient solution. Another advantage of hydroponic cultivation are the few products that are needed to make it.

How is the home hydroponic system performed?

Homemade hydroponics is not intended to grow a large variety or quantity of crops. This system combines a set of techniques based on substrates, the structures that support the plants and their own needs, such as: temperature, humidity, nutrients, water, etc.

A great technique to grow at home quickly, in small spaces and obtaining fantastic crops of great quality!

Although hydroponics is a simple culture technique, not everyone is encouraged to carry it out. However, here’s how to build your own aquatic system so you can carry out hydroponics from home. Notes.

Types of hydroponic culture systems

Within the hydroponic culture there are different techniques to perform at home, these are the most common:

  • Aquatic cultivation: this is the simplest technique without a doubt, and the most suitable for beginners in hydroponics. It is based on holding the plants in the water using a platform. This system allows you to grow about 5 crops at once.
  • Flooding/Drainage: this technique is also quite simple and its costs are low. It consists of preparing a tray with plants and placing them on top of a surface with water that is at the same time connected to a piping system. The water pump will have the important function of getting the necessary nutrients to the plants.

What will happen is that the tray will be flooded with water and nutrients that will be absorbed through the substrate. In case on liquid can be reused later.

  • Drip system: this is the most traditional technique of all, and most of us also know it. It incorporates a water collection system so that you can also reuse it later, as in the previous case.

Next, we will give you the instructions so that you can start creating your hydroponic garden at home using the water cultivation technique, the easiest for beginners.

  • The first thing you need to do is locate a waterproof container.
  • Secondly, you have to paint it with a translucent black spray and let it rest until it drys.
  • For the third step you must measure the container and use those measurements to cut a polystyrene board a little smaller than the container. This will appropriately adjust to the level changes that may be in the water.
  • Fourth, make the holes you need in the board you’ve cut, because that’s where the pots of the plants you want to grow will be placed.
  • In the fifth step place a pump to oxygenate your plants effectively.
  • Sixth, connect the pump you installed to an air line. This line has to long enough to get to the bottom of the container or but so you can float in the middle of this. In this way the oxygen bubbles that are generated will correctly reach the roots of your crops.
  • The seventh and final step is to install the hydroponics system. Fill the tank with the necessary nutrient solution and place the polystyrene board, already with your plants, inside and finally plug in and turn on the bomb.

AND READY! Start growing your fantastic hydroponic orchard!

What can I plant in my homemade hydroponic garden?

If this is your case we recommend that you plant crops such as: lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, celery or cucumbers. These plants are ideal for aquatic cultivation, as we have shown above. Thanks to the soil and its function of reserving nutrients in plants, growth will be fast and effective.

Advantages of having a hydroponic orchard at home

As you may have noticed it is not a very complex growing system, but rather the opposite, it stands out for its simplicity and good results. Here are the main advantages you will have if you decide on this type of garden at home!
