Types of outdoor hydrants

Firefighting

Due to the importance of fire safety, Llaberia Group installed passive and active fire systems, outdoors and indoors. In this blog post we will look at the systems outdoors and specifically one of its fundamental parts, the hydrants.

Sometimes a building’s fire protection systems are not enough and more action is needed, which is why these elements are installed on the public road to try to solve this problem and that the water supply does not finish.

Fire hydrants, what are they?

An outdoor fire protection hydrant is an element that is connected to a water network whose purpose is to supply water in front of a fire. It is the firefighters themselves or the emergency services who connect their own hoses and equipment to hydrants or fire hydrants. Another of its uses is to fill the tanks of fire trucks.

They are usually placed outside buildings, i.e. on public roads, although sometimes there are some exceptions. In any case, it is mandatory to signal the hydrants and indicate their nominal diameter, standard number and manufacturer name.

Outdoor fire net hydrants can be of two different types:

  • Column hydrants. Among which we find 2 variants:

Dry column hydrants: these are differentiated by emptying automatically once it has been used and do not contain water when not needed. They have a built-in impact breakage safety system.

Wet column hydrants: this type of hydrant is more effective than the previous one. In addition, it is not necessary to lift the floor in order to access its mechanism. However, they must always be kept protected from possible shocks or impacts and breakages.

  • Arch hydrants: secondly, there are these types of hydrants that are totally underground, and therefore do not give problems of space, nor of possible impacts and will also be protected from low extreme temperatures that could also harm them. It is a good solution in case of urban centers and busy cities where space is a problem.

Its main disadvantage is that, although they are effective, their usage process is slower.
