How to choose a pump for your pool

Pools

When you have to choose the right pump to install in your pool it is very common not to know which one is best for you according to your needs. In this post we will try to give you the right knowledge so that you can make a good choice and so that you know more about its functions and features.

What does a pool bomb do?

In all pool purification systems the pump is one of the most important elements, not to mention the most. It is the core of the hydraulic installation. Its function is based on bringing the water to the filter and then expelling it back into the pool through other elements called drive nozzles. It is not necessary for the pump to transmit water at high pressure, but you must move a lot of water as ideally in a maximum of 6 hours a day all the water in the pool has been filtered.

The main criteria to consider when choosing a pool pump are as follows:

Type of pump

In the process of everything, it is vital that you choose a pool pump, asit contains the filtration system and is also resistant to chlorine and other chemical agents that you use. In a crude way we would say that there are 2 great types of pool pump.

  • Pool pumps with variable speed. This type of pump has revolutionized the market thanks to its advantages. It fully adapts to the speed and consumption required for each pool. This saves a reasonable amount of money on electricity consumption.
  • Self-aspirating and centrifugal pumps. This type of pool pump is the most common in private pools. It is the “traditional” pump that has the process of suction, filtration and water drive. In the next section we will see how to calculate the power that your pool pump needs.

Pump power:

The proper power of the pump will depend on all the water that should be recirculated in a maximum of 6-8 hours per day. There is a calculation that you can do to get this information: Let’s assume that your pool is 10 meters long, 6 meters wide and in the deepest part measures 2 meters deep.

The result would be: 10 x 6 x 2 x 120 m3

With this result and the rest of the frame shown below you will already have much clearer the pump that you must install for your pool.

The filter and its capacity

It is essential that the pump you choose adapts to the dimensions of your pool so that the water circulates properly and the filter does its job without damaging or harming the rest of the process.

The filter has a limited filtration capacity, so if the pump you want to install has more power than necessary and moves more water than the filter can filter, problems will arise in your installation. You don’t have to fall for that mistake. If the flow rate moving the pump is greater than adequate, the water will have to pass very quickly through the filter media and the process will not be optimal. And if the flow is not sufficient, the correct filtering process will not be done either.

Filtering control tables

The control panel will make your pool work almost autonomously. The fundamental part of the control panel is the 24-hour clock to turn the pool pump on and off during the hours needed each day to filter the water. The control panel will depend on the power of the pump, so you’ll need to choose the one that’s trained for the power you need in your case.

In addition, the control panels contain swimming pool motor guards and switches to be able to disconnect the pump if required.

Power

You should not miss selecting a pump for your pool that is in line with the electrical voltage of your home. The most commonly used in houses is 230V (single-phase). There are also pumps up to 380V (three-phase), although they are not as common.
