Biomass advantages

Environmental Medium Solutions

What is energy through biomass?

This type of energy is based on using heterogeneous organic matter as the energy source. This matter is made up of different organic wastes, it does not have to be the same. It can be from nut shells to wood remains, such as pellet or sawdust which is one of the most common.

This type of energy source is being used more and more every day.

Why? Getting this kind of energy is a much cheaper process. But most notably it is that it is renewable, which emits much less polluting emissions into the air thanks to its form of combustion and consequently also helps to reduce fires in forests. Even so, it is very important that this energy source is achieved in a controlled manner and with respect for sustainability.

Types of biomass:

  • Natural: on the one hand there is natural biomass, whose type of biomass includes forests, trees, plants, etc. To give an example, we would be talking about natural biomass energy source when using the remains of leaves and small branches after felling trees and forest farms.
  • Residual: on the other side there is residual biomass. This type comes from the use of manure waste, metropolitan waste, sawdust, slaughterhouse remains, etc.

What is biomass used for?

Its most habitual use is to generate heat through heating systems. At the industrial level it is sometimes used to obtain electricity, although it is a more complex process. Biomass boilers can be installed in private homes, get heating (underfloor heating) and also heat water.

Advantages of biomass:

  • It is an economical energy compared to gas or diesel heating systems, the biomass heating system saves you many costs. It allows you to save up to 4 times more than other conventional systems.
  • Its raw material for energy generation is agroforestry waste, so its cost is very low or non-existent. CO2 emissions into the atmosphere will be greatly reduced thanks to biomass.
  • This energy source is considered inexhaustible, as biomass raw material will always be assured, as it does not depend on climatic factors, such as other renewable energies, such as solar energy. Therefore, it will always be available and within reach.
  • Thanks to biomass there is more cleaning in the mountains and helps the use of the waste of the industries because the boilers are fed with branches, fallen leaves…
  • There is a very advanced technology, with guarantee of operation, high performance, and reliability.

Europe has become the continent that chooses to use this type of energy source, and in many countries they make use of biomass plants. On the European continent is where the 5 largest power stations in the world are located, spread between England, Poland and Finland.
