Agricultural solutions for environmental impact

The environmental problem we are facing can be tackled from different sectors and different approaches. In this article, we are going to focus on the solutions for environmental impact that can be provided from an agricultural point of view related to the responsible use of farms, and the positive contributions that can be made to the pollution generated by this industry.

Solutions for environmental impact in the agricultural sector

Firstly, here is a list of activities in the agricultural sector that will contribute to the responsible commitment to the environment of planet Earth:

  • A possible solution to prevent environmental impact could be to plant legumes, such as lentils or chickpeas. These crops absorb nitrogen from the air and then settle it in the soil, thus enriching the soil for the crops that will be planted later. This technique saves you from using large amounts of fertilizers that could be very harmful to the environment.
  • To fight land degradation, we can opt for CO2 retention in the soil, thus restoring agricultural land. This technique can be used, for example, through direct seeding, minimum tillage and cover crops. Besides, crop rotation can also reduce land degradation.
  • The use of organic fertilizers is preferrable over fertilizers that contain large amounts of chemicals and phytosanitary products.
  • If you own a farm, it is very important to consider the basic techniques to carry out out precision agriculture. Why? Because if we do so, we will effectively support the battle against climate change and reduce the environmental impact. As a result, we will be saving a large amount of our water resources, energy and fertilizers. Not only will we reduce environmental deterioration, but also our productivity will increase and our soil will be much more profitable. In order to achieve all this, these techniques must be encouraged and promoted to make them more accessible to all the people working in this sector.
  • In order to help thousands of people involved in the agricultural sector to escape poverty, the promotion of a more optimized genetic selection of plant species for cultivation has been put on the table.  As a result, it is expected that crops will become more resistant to more extreme climatic factors caused by global warming.
  • We have to focus on energy saving and efficiency measures directly related to agricultural activity, with the aim of caring for the ecosystem.
  • Implementation of systems for water efficiency in agricultural areas. Currently, sustainable agriculture can go hand in hand with responsible management of water resources. Some of the solutions that can be implemented are:

1. Preserving the natural state of the soil through traditional cultivation techniques and the use of organic fertilizers.

2. Establishing a program for the prevention and control of possible pests, which promotes their biological control.

3. Developing more hydrological and water resources projects. Such as, for example, the construction of water reuse plants.

In addition to these techniques, here are other solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, for instance:

  • Encouraging the optimization of crop residue management.
  • Promoting reforestation techniques.
  • Improving ecosystem resilience and maintaining biodiversity by planting different varieties of crops that can resist to droughts, storms, floods and any other extreme weather conditions.
